How Does the Extend Feature Work?

Is this the ultimate learn-to-ride bike?

A true 3-in-1 product that will see your child on a sturdy balance bike from the very early learning phase. When they are ready, you add on the pedals, then as they grow, you extended the bike to fit their height.

Stage 1: Introduces a balancing concept with the lowest frame height and without pedals. This is ideal for children around 3 years old, who can learn how to put their full weight on the seat and push with their feet.

Stage 2: Learn to cycle; it’s time to add the pedals and familiarise them with pedaling rather than pushing while maintaining their balance.

Stage 3: As your child grows taller, extend the frame and raise the seat for a comfortable fit to around 6 years of age.

Xtend Product Dimensions

• The seat adjusts from 15.6 inches to 23 inches
• The handlebar extends from 25.6 inches to 27.6 inches
• The frame adjusts from 41.3 inches to 42.5 inches

For most beginner pedal bikes, you can adjust the seat height, but it does not change your handlebar height, meaning a taller child becomes bent over. With the Xtend, the whole bike will grow with them.

The Xtend feature allows your child to lean forward rather than sit upright, which helps with maneuverability as your child grows in confidence on their bike.

Whilst other convertible balance-to-pedal products give you the option to add pedals at additional cost, the pedal conversion kit comes as standard with the Xtend, with all the tools you need are included in the packaging.

Xtend Mg+ Product weight

Although the bike is made from magnesium-lite alloy, it is a little heavier than other balance bikes we’ve previously used.

This was Ok for our tester, but smaller children may find the weight an issue after extended periods of use. She observed that while the bike was easy for her child to maneuver, they had trouble keeping it upright, and there were a few tumbles while they were riding. 

Overall, our tester felt that the product’s sturdy frame was an excellent trade-off for its heavier weight. Considering the bike is intended to last for several years (and probably through several children), she preferred that it erred on the more durable side than not.

Wheels and Brake system

The bike uses 14-inch pneumatic tires, with a front disc brake and rear coaster brakes.

The disc brake on the front is a premium feature, especially considering many children’s bikes only have brake pads. 

You can also easily adjust the tightness of the disc brake using the Allen wrench included in the bike’s assembly kit, and the instructions show how to change the brake leaver side depending on your child’s dominant hand. 

The coaster brake mechanism doesn’t really come into play until you put the pedals on, but it’s a nice additional safety feature for older kids. 

Although the tester doesn’t need the pedals for her little one quite yet, she did notice that they were an adequate width for a younger child’s foot. However, older riders might find them a bit too narrow, especially as they near the maximum age and size.

Our Verdict on the SmarTrike Xtend

This is an excellent balance-to-pedal bike option for young children just learning to ride. It also provides great value for families with multiple kids (considering the durable and sturdy design). 

Here are a few additional features our tester commented on: 

Ease of Assembly and Instructions

While our tester is the first to admit that she isn’t the savviest bike assembler, she remarked that putting the bicycle together in balance mode took some time. It took just under two hours to assemble, and this was mainly due to a few different things: 

• Some parts of the bike had been assembled in the factory, so you although you could skip forward some steps, you need to stop to verify it has been done correctly. 
• Some parts looked differently in the instructions as opposed to how they appeared in real life. 
• The instruction booklet didn’t include a picture of the plastic insert that allows you to adjust the bike’s frame, so the tester initially threw it out (as there were several plastic covers on other parts that weren’t necessary). 

Once everything was fully assembled, however, the bike’s different components were easy and quick to adjust. However, our tester did comment that you have to have an Allen wrench handy when you want to change anything, as the screws are too tight to adjust by hand.  

Although the Xtend comes with a conversion kit (which is wonderful), it lacks a a kickstand. Unfortunately, there’s no way to stand the bike up whilst no one is riding it, meaning it has to lean against something or lay on its side.

Additional Safety Features 

One thing that the SmarTrike Xtend 3-in-1’s design excelled at was safety features. Each wheel has a reflective mirror, and the pedals are also reflective. You can also attach additional reflectors to the front and rear of the bike. Parents of young children can never be too careful, and these extra visibility features are a nice plus. 

How did the child like the SmarTrike Xtend? 

Now to the reaction of the real reviewer, our tester’s child!

As of now, he can’t get enough of his new bike! She says he rides it all around the house since there is currently snow and ice on the ground outside. Undoubtedly, he’ll be zipping up and down the driveway once the ground thaws out in the spring. 

Overall, you will undoubtedly get yourself a bike here that lasts longer as you won’t be buying a balance bike and, soon after, a pedal bike. It is certainly a unique product on the market and worthy of being on your younger child’s wishlist this Christmas.

The Fit

It’s critical that your child’s boots are tight-fit to allow for more control and much better ankle support.

This will add more protection for your child’s feet and lower legs and much better maneuverability and control.

So, always check the sizing before you buy, and if possible, opt for adjustable skates as these may, not only last longer, but protect your child better.

Wheels

The right wheels are important when your daughter is considering using roller derby skates. You would normally use indoor wheels because roller derby is played indoors!

However, there’s nothing to stop the user from changing the wheels to outdoor wheels should the requirement arise.

Whatever the case, you need to choose wheels that are the perfect balance for your child, the floor and the boots.

Here are a couple of points to consider when choosing your child’s wheels:

Flooring And Durometer

If the floors are slippery, you should opt for a wheel hardness rating of 88-92A.

These are soft wheels and allow for the skater to have much more grip to the surface and less of a chance of falling or slipping.

For floors with perfect grip though, you could go for a wheel hardness rating of 93-99A.

In the center of it all, many people choose 92-95A for things like sports arenas. This allows for the best of both worlds.

The weight of your child will also play a role here. Harder wheels will normally be chosen for heavier children, whereas softer wheels are ideal for lighter-weighted children.

One of the most sure-fire ways to know what is best for your child is to see if they can borrow a pair from their new teammates for a few minutes.

Bearings

Contrary to other types of skating, the bearings are not a huge consideration to make for roller derby skating.

As roller derby typically takes place indoors, the longevity of the wheels will be longer anyway.

However, it is still something you should think about. The bearings of wheels play a role in the precision of how the wheels turn. If the precision is higher, the wheels will roll better.

The bearing’s precision is indicated by an ABEC rating or score. The higher the number, the better the precision. However, this is not always the full story.

You’re always better off looking at the bigger picture, such as the brand’s reputation.

This is because in the past, many people have purchased an ABEC-7 rated pair of roller derby skates which have been faster than a pair of ABEC-9 rated roller skates.

What’s more, the ABEC rating will not indicate the durability of the bearings either.

Fingerless Gloves

Gloves are a great idea for your younger kids if they’re starting out in the skating world.

While arguably they are not as important a safety precaution as elbow pads and knee pads, they can be extremely important.

Front and rear lights don’t need to be particularly expensive either. However, it should be noted that it’s always a good idea to check the pricing before you purchase and investigate the manufacturer a little. 

The main reason for this is that it’ll make a difference when it comes to the longevity of the headlights and can be the difference between a light that lasts a week to a light that lasts a year. 

2. Scooter Lock

One of the most important accessories aside from safety gear is a durable scooter lock that is easy for your kids to use.

There are different kinds of scooter locks on the market and these are very similar (often used interchangeably) to bike locks.

However, it’s probably been a while since you first took your first steps toward bike independence, so you may be a little unsure of when the time is right for your child.

Although it is common for children around the age of 5 to start riding bikes without training wheels, this is not always the case. Some children learn much more quickly than others, and some may need a little extra time. 

This guide will explain everything you need to know about removing your child’s training wheels from their bike. 

When Is The Right Time?

As we said, about the age of five is typically when kids have their training wheels (stabilizers) removed, but this isn’t always the case. 

For example, you can purchase balance bikes for kids aged three and up. It all depends on how confident and experienced your child is, along with their height, weight, and general strength.  Please don’t feel concerned if your child is older and still reliant on their training wheels.

You may want to read some of the pros and cons of starting your child with a balance bike vs. training wheels – there’s no one right answer, but it might help to have the facts.

Let’s take a look at some of these in more detail. 

Confidence 

Perhaps one of the biggest factors in deciding whether or not to remove your child’s training wheels will be their confidence on the bike. The biggest and maybe most important factor of riding a bike is the ability to balance.

However, when we lose balance – we feel out of control, and this can often lead to falling and potentially hurting ourselves. This isn’t just the case for kids, this also applies to adults too.

As a result, your child will need to have enough confidence to be ready for the training wheels to come off in the first place. 

Building Confidence Step By Step 

If you want to help your child build confidence to remove the training wheels, you can start by giving them basic balance training without a bike. 

Stand outside with them, allow them to stand on one leg, and learn the basics of balancing without having something to hold them up.

Next, either make or purchase a balance bike. As balance and steering is the key to riding a bike correctly, this training will be excellent for beginners. 

If they are worried about hurting themselves, do this training in the yard or around softer areas.

Mountain Bike Weight 

Mountain bikes are built much heavier than road bikes. This is so that they can deal with the stresses and strains that come along with the unpredictable terrains off-road. 

This weight generally comes from the frame which is much sturdier and tougher than you’ll see with road bikes. 

This means that it can be much more difficult for your child to maneuver the bike around on road surfaces.

Assuming your child doesn’t have a hardtail bike, the suspension can actually increase the ride’s enjoyability. 

Additionally, it’s arguably easier to maintain grip on a mountain bike due to its handles. Unlike road bikes, the handlebars on a mountain bike are flat and covered in rubber, designed for your hands to stay comfortable and tight to. 

This can make it much easier for your child to deal with some of the less-than-stellar road surfaces that can occur in many areas.

Does My Child Need More Than One Bike?

You may now be thinking to yourself if your child can ride a mountain bike on the road – is it worth getting your child another bike? Will they need one?

Overall, it depends on where you live and how capable your child is with their riding. However, it is recommended that your child has bikes specifically for whatever they are planning to do. 

While hybrid bikes can be useful, they are not always the better option, and it can often be better to purchase multiple bikes for your child instead, particularly if they’re interested in road racing.

In other words, if your child is going to use the roads and will also be using a bike off-road, you’d be better off purchasing both a mountain bike and a road bike as they have two very distinct purposes and design features.

As a result, your child may wish to bring their electric scooter with them when you fly away somewhere. The problem is, of course, that some things aren’t allowed on planes – and electric items can be tricky.

The short answer is that some electric scooters might be allowed on a plane. However, it will depend on the size and type of battery used, along with the airline’s permission specifically.

This guide will look at whether or not you can bring your child’s electric scooter on a plane or not, along with some other handy pieces of information.

Electric Scooters And Planes 

One of the reasons it can be tricky to know whether or not you can bring electric scooters on a plane is where you might be traveling to and from.

The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) in the United States sets out a list of specifications for the types and sizes of batteries that may be allowed onto flights.

For the purposes of this guide, we will focus on US domestic flights., governed by the FAA.

The current Federal Aviation Administration guidelines state that electric scooters are okay to go on planes, assuming they use a lithium or lithium-ion battery under 100WH. 

If the battery is between 100WH and 160WH, the passenger must get the airline’s explicit permission to take an electric scooter on the plane, and any batteries higher than 160WH are prohibited entirely for safety reasons. 

This is not to say that they can’t be transported, though. If, for some reason, you must transport an electric scooter with a battery over 160WH, then you can – but it must be done in the correct way.

These will be shipped using specialist freighter companies, and they will label the contents as hazardous materials. This is because batteries can have the potential to catch fire, and in some settings – they could even explode. 

You may be wondering how electronic items like laptops and smartphones can easily be allowed on flights, and this is because the batteries comply with FAA regulations and airline permissions.

Do I Need To Contact The Airline?

It is always advisable to contact the airline if you are planning to bring your child’s electric scooter with you.

They will help you understand the battery size and whether or not you must go through specific channels to check the scooter in.

Remember, if you plan to get a connecting flight – you need to contact both airlines before you start your journey. 

Can Electric Scooters Be Brought On Board?

The airline will likely not allow you to bring an electric scooter on the flight to place underneath your seat or in the overhead compartment. 

Some electronic items, such as electric skateboards, can be brought into the plane and placed underneath the seat or in the overhead compartment, depending on their size and battery. 

However, even then, it will be done at the discretion of the airline. This is why you should be sure to contact the airline first and discuss your needs and plans with them. 

If an electric scooter is not allowed onto the flight this way, they may need to be checked in officially along with your luggage. 

A Possible Problem 

One problem you may find is that a lot of electric scooters have batteries that far exceed 160WH.

This isn’t to say that you can’t find electric scooters that are smaller than this, but a common problem is that they are large batteries.

As we mentioned, you cannot bring an electronic item with a battery of 160WH or over onto a flight. However, you may still be allowed to bring the scooter on board if you remove the battery and leave it at home.

Of course, you’d need to purchase a replacement battery at your destination, but this is one way you could still bring an electric scooter with you.

How To Pack Electric Scooters For Flights 

If you are able to take your child’s electric scooter, assuming the airline is okay with it and the battery is not too large – then you will need to know how to pack them correctly.

Electric scooters are renowned for being excellent items to pack and fold away. It’s advisable that you purchase an electric scooter carry case. Some people may decide to pack the scooter into their suitcases, though you may find electric scooters are longer than a standard hard-sided suitcase.

While an electric scooter may fit inside a suitcase, it is not the best option for checking in the scooter as it may take longer to get through security. 

Being open and transparent about what you carry is the best option – so ensure you carry your child’s electric scooter in its own carry case. This is also why it is advisable to contact the airline first.

Unless you remove the battery due to its size, avoid tampering with it before it is checked in, and do not try to carry the battery on board separately.

It is possible that the airline may refuse your travel if you attempt this, and tampering with batteries can be dangerous. 

The Bottom Line
