Are you looking for the perfect pair of roller skates for your daughter? Roller skating has never really gone out of fashion and is one of the best types of exercise for adventurous kids.
Whether it’s your girl’s very first skates or she’s looking to graduate from toddler play skates to something more durable that will grow with her, we’ve been reviewing and comparing the leading brands of roller skates girls will love.
There are various types of roller skates available in the market today.
The most common type is traditional roller skates or “quad skates”. These come with four wheels and two axles, with two wheels in front and two behind. Quad roller skates evenly distribute your child’s weight across the base of the skate and are the best for beginners.
The other type of roller skates is inline skates. Inline skates have 3-5 wheels in a row. (Note that Rollerblades are a brand of inline skates, not a completely different type of skate!).
Each type of roller skate has its pros and cons. Here we’re specifically going to be looking at the best types of quad skates for girls.
But how do you choose a good pair of roller skates?
How To Choose A Good Pair Of Roller Skates For a Girl
When deciding on a pair of girls’ roller skates, there are some important things that you need to keep in mind. Here is what you should look out for:
The first thing that you need to check when buying a pair of roller skates for a girl is the size.
Don’t just rely on your child’s current shoe size. You will have to measure your girl’s feet with a ruler or tape measure and compare this to the sizing for the skate.
You need to measure your child’s foot length from the back of the heel to the tip of their longest toe (but do check – some brands want you to use insole size).
Read the reviews and see whether the brand of roller skate you are looking at fits “true to size” or you are better going up a size; too tight can be uncomfortable whilst too loose is a safety hazard. Unfortunately, roller skate sizing does seem to vary a lot between manufacturers.
The best choice for a growing girl is adjustable skates. Adjustable skates are designed to tighten or loosen at the twist or press of a button and can cover up to four shoe sizes giving you maximum flexibility and longevity out of your girl’s skates.
The material used to manufacture the roller skate should be comfortable and durable. It should not feel rough against their skin, and it should not break easily.
Leather is the best material for a durable skate for both indoor and outdoor use but can feel tight to begin with until the skate has been worn in.
Children only occasionally using roller skates may feel more comfortable with synthetic materials.
3. Safety Features
Safety features are another essential aspect that you need to take into consideration before buying any pair of quad roller skates. Let’s take a look at each of the component parts of the roller skate:
The wheels are the most important part of a roller skate. Make sure that the wheels on the skate are properly secured on the frame (especially important to keep checking this after your child has used the skates a few times and they have a little wear and tear).
The size of the roller skate wheels can matter too. Smaller wheels have a lower center of gravity which provides more stability for your child. Small wheels are slightly slower than larger wheels, which is great for kids who are still learning to skate.
Also consider the “hardness” of the roller skate wheels. The softer the wheels, the better they are at providing traction on smooth surfaces. Soft wheels also absorb bumps from irregular surfaces better than hard wheels when skating outside.
You only need hard wheels for high speeds. Look for the “durometer rating”; around 80A to 85A is about right for a girls’ beginner roller skate. For an experienced roller skating racer, a harder wheel may be required – 94A to 98A .
The bearings go inside the skate wheels and allow the wheels to spin on the axles. The quality is often measured by the ABEC rating (Annular Bearing Engineering Council). Most amateur roller skates will be fitted with ABEC 3 to ABEC 7 bearings.
Look at the roller skates braking system or stopper. Quad skates have the brake at the front; the larger the stopper, the easier it will be for your child to use.
For frequent-use skates such as roller derby, you’ll want the stopper to be interchangeable when it gets worn.
How does the roller skate secure to your child’s foot?
Some roller skates offer laces whilst others offer a velcro strap and buckle closure (or all three!). The buckle closure might be quicker and easier for a child to use, but some children complain this feels too tight. Laces you will need to take care that they are properly done up.
We touch more on roller skating safety below.
4. Comfort & Design
Another important factor that you need to keep an eye on when picking up a pair of roller skaters is how comfortable they are for your child to wear. See our sizing advice above as a starting point.
Some quad roller skates come in a more sneaker style, similar to their everyday shoes, whilst some are higher and cover the ankle. Beginners are likely to prefer a high-cut boot style with more ankle support.
Alternatively, the lower-cut design is better for skaters who want more flexibility and maneuverability in their ankles, such as speed skaters and roller derby.
A padded tongue can also help with the comfort and fit of the roller skate, particularly for those that come over the ankle.
The other important thing to check is their toes. If the skates pinch your kid’s toes during use, then it would be painful and uncomfortable. So make sure that the skates fit snug without being too tight.
It is recommended that children wear a thicker sock with roller skates that comes above the ankle for maximum comfort.

More FAQs on Girls’ Roller Skates
The differences are purely aesthetic. Just like kids’ bikes for boys and girls, it’s all just marketing. The quad roller skates we’ve highlighted on this page are typically preferred by girls due to the feminine colors and patterns that the brands have designed them with. For children’s sizing, roller skates perform in the same manner whether they are marketed to boys or girls.
Most children will not have the balance and coordination skills until at least 4 or 5 years of age for roller skating independently, but it is feasible that a well-coordinated 3-year-old could start with their first beginner skates. Typically you may not find proper quad roller skate sizes as we’ve described in this guide until around 4 years old.
This will partly depend on their foot size, but the other major difference between a child’s roller skate and an adult is the wheel size and bearings. For a beginner, a smaller wheel size with a lower center of gravity is better, but you may not get smaller wheels in ladies’ sizing.
Roller Skating Safety Advice For Beginners
Having the correct safety equipment including helmets, elbow, knee, and wrist pads is only part of the safety equations when it comes to kids’ roller skates.
Here are some safety guidelines from healthchildren.org you’ll want to take into consideration when your girl starts to learn how to roller skate:
- Always wear protective gear
- Skate under control and leave plenty of room to stop
- Always skate on the right side of paths and sidewalks, and pass on the left (if you’re in the US!)
- Avoid uneven pavement and areas with heavy traffic
- Observe traffic regulations, and yield to pedestrians
When it comes to a skating helmet, look for a dual-certified skateboarding helmet; these are specifically designed to withstand multiple impacts whereas a standard bike helmet has slightly different design features.
