Read on to find out all the dos and don’ts of skatepark etiquette, along with general tips for guidance.

The Basics

The guidance we’ll give you can be useful for anybody that has never been to a skatepark before. We’d also like to add some advice to parents before we begin.

If your kid is quite young, it’s a good idea to go with them to the skatepark and stay in the vicinity until they’re finished. Remember to take the below points into consideration, though!

And as always – regardless of your age, it’s critical that you wear safety gear!

Not Skating? Stay Out!

The first piece of advice to give is that it is so easy for people to get in the way without realizing it.

This can be very frustrating for other skaters when there are others in the way – so if you’re not doing anything, take a seat out of the way!

This is not just for etiquette reasons but for safety reasons too. You could get seriously hurt if you’re in the way, and so could the other skaters.

So, it’s best just to move away if you’re not gonna skate right away.

Have A Plan

You’ll probably be aware of your skills and how good you are right now at skating. If, however, you’re thinking of learning the basics at a skatepark – you might need to come up with a plan.

Skate parks are usually busy places, so you don’t want to be in the way of learning the very basics when there are others ready to do the more advanced stuff.

Now, don’t be disheartened by this. There’s nothing wrong with learning, and you’re totally fine to learn the basics at a skatepark, but if you’re gonna do that – think of these things:

• The least busy times
• Who might be there
• What can I do?

Simply put, if you want to use a skatepark to learn the basics, don’t go when it’s busy!

Pay Attention

There will likely be quite a few skaters in the skatepark, so you’ll need to be alert when you’re performing your tricks.

Others may crash into you, and you could crash into them, and nobody wants to get hurt, do they? So, just be aware of your surroundings when you’re in the area.

Don’t Snake

Snaking refers to dropping into another skater when they are right in the middle of a run. This is one of the biggest and most frequent reasons why crashes occur.

To avoid this, take a look at what the other skaters are doing and do not get in their way. This will keep you and them safe – and also avoid confrontation!

Don’t Be Scared Of Others

It can be quite daunting to turn up at a skatepark with experienced skaters, especially when they all seem older than you.

But don’t worry about them. Of course, you’ll want to be aware of them so you don’t get in their way but focus on your own game.

Remember, they’re at the skatepark so that they can skate. The majority of users simply want to enjoy their time.

Don’t Be Arrogant

Arrogance can cause conflict. Don’t laugh at other beginners if they get things wrong – or experienced skaters, for that matter.

Also, don’t try to do something crazy when you’ve got no experience; this could end up with you being seriously hurt.

Fallen? Get Up Quick!

You’re going to fall off from time to time, especially as a beginner. But don’t worry about it! You only need to remember that you have to get up immediately.

This will keep you safe from other skaters, and you’re not going to be in danger of anyone making fun of you either!

We’d also suggest, if you do fall, clench your hands into fists to help yourself back up. Fingers left splayed out are just asking to be run over.

Don’t Use The Flat Bowl

The flat bowl of the pool is out of bounds for skating – it’s simply a part of the drop. Make sure you stay well away from skating in the flat bowl.

On this point, too, it doesn’t matter if you’re skating, using your scooter, or roller skating – this area is a no-no.

Not only could you get hurt, but you’ll likely annoy some experienced skaters!

Warn Others

If your scooter or skateboard has gotten away from you – yell out “board!” to let other users know that there’s an object in the way which could potentially hurt someone.

This happens from time to time, so don’t think you’ve done anything wrong; it’s all good as long as you warn others.

Avoid Wax

Many beginners want to use the more advanced areas and wax up ramps and rails. We advise against that.

If you have to, though, always ask for permission from others.

Wax can be dangerous, and we advise roller skaters against using waxed areas, which could seriously cause your movement and injury.

Avoid Staying On The Coping

Coping areas need to be cleared as soon as you’ve finished because you’ll get in the way of other skaters – and could get hurt!

General Safety Advice

It doesn’t matter if you’re heading to the skatepark with a scooter, bike, skateboard, or roller skates – the above rules are important to think about as a beginner.

However, here’s some extra advice:

• Always know where your board, bike, or scooter is
• Always wear protective clothing, even if people try to talk you out of it

If appearance is significant to you, it should be noted that skate-style helmets are typically believed to seem younger and street-looking.

Skate helmets may also be more adaptable. They may also be used for snowboarding and in-line skating, for example, often described as multi-sport helmets.

Can You Use a Skateboard Helmet for Biking or a Bike Helmet for Skateboarding?

A helmet that may be used for both cycling and skating must be certified by the CPSC (the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission) and fulfill the ASTM F1492-15 standard; this is called being “dual-certified“

CPSC

CPSC 16 CFR 1203 is the standard certification necessary in the United States for bicycle helmets. When used appropriately, helmets that satisfy this standard protect against skull fractures and serious brain damage.

This safety standard also applies to scootering and inline roller skates but especially excluded downhill biking.

ASTM

The international standard ASTM F1492-15 governs the design and performance of skate helmets and trick roller skating. They adhere to testing protocols for skateboarding and trick roller skating helmets.

Note that there is still no US-specific safety certification for skate helmets, which is why you should look for the international standard.

Many skate-style helmets only fulfill the CPSC standard and are therefore unsuitable for skating. They may resemble skate helmets, but they may not provide appropriate protection.

Helmets built just for skateboarding (meeting only ASTM F1492-15) are not strong enough to resist the severe force that might occur in a high-speed bike collision.

Bicycle helmets are built to withstand high-velocity impacts. After one mishap, these helmets should be replaced.

Skating is analogous to biking in those collisions are less common than skateboarding, but the injuries are more severe.

For BMX biking and downhill biking, there are higher safety standards that should be met and you should look for a helmet specific to your sport.

Choosing the Right Helmet

So as a parent, how do you know you’re choosing the right product for your child?

A bike helmet can potentially save a child’s life by drastically lowering the odds of a head injury in the event of a bike, scooter, or skateboard accident. However, in order for the helmet to protect you properly, it must fit to be snug and secure. 

Allow your youngster to try it on. A helmet is similar to a pair of trousers in that two helmets of the same size might fit differently. We teach you how to properly fit a kids bike helmet here.

Examine for certificates. The label should bear the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s accreditation (CPSC). This indicates that the helmet has undergone safety testing and fulfills government safety standards.

Do not buy a second-hand helmet since you may not be able to determine whether it has been in a collision and will not be able to protect your kid as well.

The straps on the left and right sides should create a “Y” and connect just below the ear. When the helmet is off, it is easy to adjust these straps. To prevent slippage, roll the little rubber band as near to the side straps as feasible.

Tighten the chin strap until it is comfortable. Only one finger should be able to fit beneath the strap.

Replace it immediately if it has taken the brunt of an accident or has been dumped hard into the ground. A helmet only protects against one type of impact. If in doubt, replace it.

Recheck the fit and size up as your kid develops. Any bike helmet should be replaced every five years. Sunlight and weather can cause internal components to wear out over time.

If your child is undertaking more extreme bike sports such as BMX tricks or downhill racing on a mountain bike, make sure they are wearing a safety helmet that meets a higher safety standard.

When it comes to taking kids along on bike rides, there are two main types of seats that can be used: trailers and seats. A bike seat is designed to hold a child in place either on the front or back of the bike.

3. Can carry multiple children – Some bike trailers allow riders to carry multiple children at once. This makes them ideal for families who want to go out on group bike rides together or if you plan on going on trips where you want to bring the whole family. 
4. Safe – All bike trailers are equipped with safety features such as brakes and locks. These prevent any accidents from happening. 
5. Convenient – You don’t need to worry about providing extra bags and storage, most trailers come with places to store water bottles and snacks. Just grab your bike and head out! 

Disadvantages

1. Costly – Compared to a bike seat, many bike trailers cost between $200-$400 making them quite expensive. However, this does not mean that they aren’t worth the money. Many people do find that they are worth every penny spent.

Bike Seats For Infants &And Toddlers 

A bike seat is a great way to transport your child when cycling because it provides safety and comfort for the child. There are two types of bike seats, these are front-mounted seats and rear-mounted seats. We’re going to take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of both. 

Front-Mounted Seats 

These front-mounted seats or commonly called “shotgun bike seats” are designed to fit over the handlebars so that the rider sits directly behind the child. These are suitable for children aged between 9 months and 2 years and can only hold a weight of up to 30 pounds. 

Advantages 

1. Best for younger kids – Front-mounted seats are best suited for smaller kids who weigh less than 30 pounds. They also offer a lot of stability which means there is less chance of falling off and injuring themselves.
2.  Easy to attach & remove – Attaching and removing a front-mounted seat is very simple. The seat attaches to the bars via straps. Once attached simply slide the seat onto the bars and tighten the straps. It’s as easy as that!
3. Children can be seen – Because these seats are installed at the front of the bike in front of the rider, you can keep an eye on children for the whole journey without any worry about what may be happening behind you. 
4. Views – Sitting at the front of the bike has other advantages. Your child will be able to see the amazing views whilst on your bike ride. 

Disadvantages 

1. Not suitable for older kids – Front-mounted bikes seats are only suitable for children under 3 years old. Older children may struggle to sit still long enough for the seat to stay put. Also, the lack of a backrest may make it hard for older kids to rest comfortably.

Rear-Mounted Seats

These are designed to sit at the back of the bike resting on the rack above the back wheel so that the rider sits slightly in front of the child. These are better suited to older kids who weigh up to 70 pounds. 

Advantages

1. Suitable for older kids – Rear-mounted seats are more suitable for older kids. With a weight allowance of up to 70 pounds, rear-mounted seats can hold children of up to around 5 years old. 
2. Safety – Rear-mounted seats provide greater protection for the child by preventing them from falling backward. In addition, they prevent the child from being thrown forwards if they fall off.
3. Comfort – A rear-mounted seat offers more support for the child. This makes it easier for them to sit still for longer periods of time.
4. Views – As with front-mounted seats, sitting at the back of the bicycle gives children a clear view of the scenery. 

Disadvantages

1. Difficult to install – Installing and removing a rear-mount seat requires a bit of effort.  Not ideal if you don’t have much experience or confidence with DIY.

It’s all part of the fun but it can take a little time to build up a child’s roller skating skills until they gain confidence, and a little patience on the teacher’s part too.

If you want your child or teen to learn how to roller skate successfully, here are 10 simple steps to see you through to skating success.

1. Safety First

While learning how to skate is a lot of fun, it also comes with its share of risks.

Like any sport on wheels, it is essential that alongside the obvious – your child’s first roller skates – you buy them the proper protective safety equipment.

This includes:

• A dual-certified skating helmet
• Wrist pads
• Elbow pads
• Knee pads

Wearing these items won’t entirely prevent accidents but will certainly soften the fall and prevent serious injuries to important parts of the body.

2. Start With The Right Attitude & Right Position

Even before that first skate lesson starts, work on your child’s confidence.

They will understandably feel nervous before trying a new sport, especially one where falling down and potential injuries are par for the course.

Go through some of the motions involved in starting, slowing and stopping in roller skates before the skates are even on their feet.

• Have them start by holding their arms in front of them and their knees slightly bent.
• Hands to their knees is their “safe position”.-

This will be fundamental for everything we’re about to teach below.

3. Familiarise Your Child With The Feel of the Skates

Even strapping on the skates can be an unusual feel for your child, to begin with. Unlike most sports in their regular trainers, skates are likely to feel tight. Make sure they’ve been properly fitted and adjusted without toes being pinched before your lesson starts.

You’ll want some time to familiarise them with how the skates feel and work before they hit a smooth flat surface. Can you start on carpet or grass while they get a feel for the skates?

Avoid places such as staircases, steps, and other areas where a person could easily slip and fall.

Get them walking with the skates on, with a soft surface first so if they fall over, they will have a much easier landing. Having something to grab will help too, such as the back of the couch or a fence or railing.

Find a comfortable position for you both when in motion, be it holding one hand to their side, or both hands in front of them. Avoid gripping your child from behind or under their arms.

Once you’re both comfortable and confident – it’s time to find a smooth flat surface and get rolling properly.

4. Start Simple – From Rolling to Gliding

If you want your child to become a proficient skater, you’ll first need to make sure he or she knows how to stand and then roll properly before moving on to more advanced moves.

The simplest form of roller skating involves just rolling forward and backward along the ground, so this is a good place to begin.

• Keep knees bent and lean slightly forward.
• While holding a child’s hand or hands, encourage them to roll forward.
• Get them to pick up one foot at a time and start walking/marching to practice balance.
• Once confidence grows with basic rolling, encourage them to start gliding.
• They do this by continuing to step forward but lengthening their stride.
• They’ll eventually be able to push off with their back foot while rolling forward on their front foot.
• Gliding can take several sessions to master so stick with it; if they’re struggling, stick to a simple march.

Note! It’s also highly recommended that the parent or teacher NOT be in skates for this first lesson. You are there to provide stability only, not drag them along.

5. Learning How To Stop

Going forward is a great start, but knowing how to slow down and safely stop is just as important and will be their best line of defense against tumbles.

• Start by practicing how to use the brakes (this is the stopper at the front for a quad skate) before they set off.
• Practice the motion of bending their knees and putting their hands on their knees to stabilize and slow down when they feel the wobbles coming.
• Instruct them to lean their body forward and push down with one foot, digging the skate into the ground to come to a complete stop.

It may take some practice at first, but once they get the hang of it, they’ll find it easier than ever to keep up with the rest of the crowd.

6. Learning To Turn

Once they can go forward and stop, you’ll want to teach them how to turn. Turning is about shifting body weight during a glide to change the direction they’re headed.

• Have them shift their body slightly to the right, their body should naturally start to veer right. Try this on both sides of their body so they can feel how much weight they need to turn left and right.

• This can be tricky at first as they need a good sense of balance. To start, have them simply hold your hands in their skates and press their weight from one side to the other so they can feel which muscles they need to engage.

• Once they’re feeling confident, start gliding then shift their weight in the direction they want to turn.
• Let go of their hands and let them move their weight independently.
• With this move mastered, they should be able to start making laps in a skating rink.

7. Gaining Speed

Once they have these fundamental maneuvers down, they’ll want to build up some more momentum.

• Instruct your child to lean forward a little further and pump their arms backward and forth, just like when they’re running, whilst continuing to glide their skates.

To get some speed up, it’s essential they push off on their back foot, making sure they’re on an even, flat surface.

8. I Get Knocked Down, But I Get Up Again

It’s completely normal to take a few tumbles at the start when learning to skate (or even after you’ve been skating for years!)

If they fall, remind them of the importance of getting back up. Their safety gear is there doing what it needs to do. Remind your child that they’re doing a great job and they’ll only get better with practice.

Your reaction counts as much as anything; a smile with reassurance is far better than “OMG, are you OK?” or “You’re doing it wrong!”.

If your child isn’t injured, give them just a few seconds to process what happened and perhaps get over the shock and get them straight back onto their feet. They’ll probably need a helping hand or make their way to a railing to start, getting upright on your own with wheels on your feet is no mean feat!

Teaching them how to stand on their own though is an essential skill in itself.

• Step one – always tuck fingers in and make fists – you don’t want other skaters running over those digits!
• Then, from a seated position, have them roll their bottom to one side
• Get up on one knee
• Place their hands on this forward knee and pull up the rest of their body weight.

9. Learn Skating Etiquette

Remember if they’re practicing at a roller rink, there’s some common etiquette that applies.

• They need to move with the flow of other skaters – most rinks will mark the direction of travel
• Try not to weave in and out of line if they can help it
• If they want to stop, look for a safe spot to do so, heading to an edge or an exit, not dead in front of other skaters.

10. Practice, Practice, Practice… And Have Fun!

Learning how to skate doesn’t have to be all work and no play. As soon as they feel comfortable enough to move around freely, try taking part in some fun activities like a roller disco or roller derby. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the sport and have a great time doing it.

Don’t ever push your child before they’re ready. There’s no sooner way you’ll find those skates shoved to the darkest depths of their wardrobe. Work at their pace (not what friends, siblings, and other kids are doing) and be there right alongside them at the start until their confidence grows.

Half-Finger Vs Full Finger Gloves

Full finger gloves have more room for your fingers, but this means they will also cover more of your hand. If you want to avoid any potential issues with your child’s skin getting chafed by the glove, then these would be perfect.

There are several advantages to having a hand brake. For starters, it’s easy to use. You just grab the lever and pull it towards yourself. No pedaling is required; however, some argue that smaller kids don’t have the grip, reach, or coordination to use a hand brake.

Another benefit of hand brakes is that they’re adjustable. You can adjust the amount of tension in the cables so that the bike will stop faster or slower depending on the situation.

However, hand brakes also come with some disadvantages. Because the lever is directly connected to the wheel, it could slip off the rim if you let go of it too quickly.

Which Is Better: Coaster Brakes Or Hand Brakes?

If you want to buy your child their first bike, then you may wonder whether to get a coaster brake or a hand brake. In this section, we’ll be comparing the pros and cons of both types of brakes.

Pros And Cons Of Coasters Vs Hand Brakes

Advantages Of Coaster Brakes

• Easy To Use – A big advantage of coasters is how simple they are to use. Instead of having to pedal while pulling back on the handles, all you do is push back on the handlebars.
• Helps Kids To Learn How To Pedal – Pedaling a bicycle isn’t the most intuitive thing for a child to learn at first. Therefore, by connecting the braking system to pedaling, your child will get used to the feel of pedaling the bike forwards or backward much more easily; pedal forwards to go, backward to stop.

Disadvantage Of Coaster Brakes

• Accidental Activation – One disadvantage of coasters is that you can accidentally activate them while riding. An accidental backpedal can lead to skidding and accidents.
• Inefficiency – The other big downside to coaster brakes is that they are very inefficient compared to hand brakes. More effort is required by your child to bring the bike to a complete stop when their bike has coaster brakes.
• Unsuitable on Rough Terrain – Coaster brakes are simply unsuitable on rough terrain. When going over bumps and avoiding hazards you want the ability to take your feet off the pedals and to backpedal when needed; you don’t want coasters on your mountain bike or learning to BMX.
• Uneconomical to Service – If your coaster brake is wearing out, you have little choice but to replace the whole brake unit.
• Pedal Start Position – When kids learn to ride a bike, they are often taught to place the pedals in a ‘starting position’ before they get going. This starting position is much more difficult to find if you can’t pedal backward without the bike moving.
• Weight – Coaster brakes can add considerably more weight to your child’s bike than a hand brake.

Advantage Of Hand Brakes

• Easier To Master – While there are many benefits to using a hand brake, one of its biggest advantages is that it’s easier to master than a coaster brake. Your child won’t need as much practice to become proficient at using a hand brake.
• Adjustable Tension – As mentioned earlier, hand brakes allow you to adjust the tension of the cables. This lets you completely control the speed at which the bike stops.
• Easier to Regain Balance – Because you can easily spin the pedals forwards and backward, it’s easier to remount the bike and regain your balance as the pedals can be moved to exactly where you need them.
• Safety Features – Hand brakes come with safety features such as automatic release mechanisms. These prevent children from being able to operate the brakes unless they know how to properly put them into action.
• Replacement Brake Pads – If your brake pads are starting to were then, this part of the child’s bike is easy to replace, whereas, on a coaster bike, failing brakes mean you need to replace the whole braking system.

Disadvantages Of Hand Brakes

• More Coordination is Needed – Small hands may not have the reach and gripping power needed for a hand brake.
• Potential to Flip – If hard pressure is applied to only the front wheel, there is a potential for your child to flip over the handlebars.
• Slippery Cables – Another drawback of hand brakes is that the cables tend to be slippery. This makes it hard to grip onto the handlebars and pull back on the levers. However, if you invest in some grippy gloves for your child, you can avoid this issue.
• Difficulty Learning How To Pedal – Just like coaster brakes, learning to pedal a bike takes time. However, since hand brakes require less effort to use, it may take longer for your child to learn this skill.

Coaster Brakes vs Hand Brakes? What does the law say?

It is not uncommon to find a child’s bike fitted with both a rear coaster brake and a front hand brake. A front hand brake alone can cause dangers in flipping on the handlebars so it’s recommended (and often legislated) that you also have a rear-wheel brake on a child’s bicycle.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission states that sidewalk bikes manufactured in the US over 22″ seat height at the lowest setting, but under 25″ must have a foot brake fitted. Bikes under 22″ do not need a brake as long as it does not have a freewheeling system.

This only applies to “sidewalk bikes” – bikes made for rough terrains such as BMX and Mountain Bikes do not need to meet this requirement. It’s also important to note that this rule was made in the 1970s and has not been updated; hand brake technology has significantly improved since the 70s!

European Union standards require a bicycle to be manufactured with two independent braking systems, both front and rear brakes but does not specify if they have to be hand or foot brakes, leaving this to legislation, custom, or preference of individual countries.

Australian safety standards also require a child’s bike to have two independent braking systems and one must be a back pedal brake.

Can I change a coaster brake to a hand brake?

Yes, it’s possible to make a modification to your child’s bike to remove the coaster brake from the rear wheel and make it a freewheel hub. It’s a job we recommend you approach your local bike store for help to ensure the switch is made safely.

NB – In the US your bike will come fitted with the coaster brake, the freewheel kit must be bought separately and installed.

So Coaster Brake or Hand Brake for Your Child’s Bike?

Ultimately, it’s safe to say that hand brakes are much safer and more effective for your child’s bike than coaster brakes.

While it might be easier for a child to get used to braking with a coaster system at first, this just puts them at a disadvantage as soon as they move onto bigger bikes with hand brake systems.

Not to mention, the fact that hand brakes are generally safer to use than coaster brakes as long as your kid knows how to use them properly. Training and proper instructions from the outset are essential.

Look out for hand brakes specifically made for youth bikes. They are easier to reach and operate than those found on adult bikes.

If your child is slow in developing coordination skills or has any sort of disability that may make the use of hand brakes difficult or impossible, of course, stick to coaster brakes until they are ready to transition.

At the end of the day, it’s not easy to teach a child to learn how to ride a bike but once they get the hang of it, it’s so rewarding to see them riding around enjoying life!
