Skateboarding is very popular, and you’d think that you could just take them on a flight right? They’re harmless, aren’t they?

Well, it’s a little more complicated than that. So, we’ll answer all your biggest questions about bringing skateboards on a plane and what you may need to do.

The Basics On Flying With Skateboards

We must cover a few things before diving into more detail later in this guide.

First, we need to recognize that many airlines are different and may have their own rules and regulations when it comes to what is allowed on their flights.

As a result, it’s always best to double-check with your specific airline before you plan to take skateboards onto the plane.

Next, it’s important to note that many different kinds of skateboards exist. Some are very long, some are short and compact, whilst others are electric.

Each of these can potentially have different rules, and, once again, the airline will be the final say.

Electric Skateboards

Electric skateboard rules for flights are probably the easiest to cover, to begin with.

The current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations state that electric skateboards can go on a plane if the battery is less than 100Wh.

They also state that batteries over this and up to 160Wh will need airline permission to be allowed on a flight. Anything over 160Wh is absolutely prohibited for a normal passenger flight.

If you need to transport your electric skateboard from A to B, you still can, but you must go through the correct channels.

This means the battery must be transported using a specialist freighter company and labeled as a hazardous material.

The reason for this is due to the battery. Batteries are hazardous on a flight as they have the potential to catch fire.

Airlines typically allow electronic goods such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets on board because the batteries involved comply with the airline and FAA guidance.

Avoid the urge to remove the battery of your electric skateboard and put it elsewhere because you could face a large fine or other action.

Summary

If your child’s electric skateboard’s battery is under 100Wh, you should be allowed to take it onto a plane.

Between 101Wh and 160Wh you must speak with the airline; anything over this is strictly prohibited.

For peace of mind, always contact the airline (or airlines if you are catching a connecting flight) before you are due to leave.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are typically fine with skateboards on planes, but they state that the final say will rest with the officer on duty at the time.

How To Pack Skateboards For Flights

The best way to check in your child’s skateboard onto a flight is to disassemble it and put it into a skateboard bag. All you’ll have to do is remove the trucks, and you’re golden!

You can find numerous different types, colors, sizes etc. for skateboard bags, so you should find one to your liking online or in stores.

If you do not have a skateboard bag, try to find a duffel bag that is large enough to accommodate your disassembled skateboard.

Ensure that you make the airline staff aware at check-in what is in the bag.

It is a good idea to put the components into a separate, smaller bag and place that inside your larger skateboard bag.

It’s always advised to disassemble the skateboard for your child and pack the bag yourself.

You may need to explain this to airline staff, but you’re better off claiming the skateboard is yours to avoid further security questions!

Depending on which airline you are flying, you may not necessarily need to pack a skateboard.

However, if you do need to check in the skateboard as baggage, you should disassemble the skateboard and place it into an appropriate bag.

Can I Bring A Longboard Onto A Plane?

You don’t want to put yourself or your child in danger or in an embarrassing situation because you don’t know what is expected of you. As a result, we’ve written this handy guide to help you before you hit your first skate park.

Read on to find out all the dos and don’ts of skatepark etiquette, along with general tips for guidance.

The Basics

The guidance we’ll give you can be useful for anybody that has never been to a skatepark before. We’d also like to add some advice to parents before we begin.

If your kid is quite young, it’s a good idea to go with them to the skatepark and stay in the vicinity until they’re finished. Remember to take the below points into consideration, though!

And as always – regardless of your age, it’s critical that you wear safety gear!

Not Skating? Stay Out!

The first piece of advice to give is that it is so easy for people to get in the way without realizing it.

This can be very frustrating for other skaters when there are others in the way – so if you’re not doing anything, take a seat out of the way!

This is not just for etiquette reasons but for safety reasons too. You could get seriously hurt if you’re in the way, and so could the other skaters.

So, it’s best just to move away if you’re not gonna skate right away.

Have A Plan

You’ll probably be aware of your skills and how good you are right now at skating. If, however, you’re thinking of learning the basics at a skatepark – you might need to come up with a plan.

Skate parks are usually busy places, so you don’t want to be in the way of learning the very basics when there are others ready to do the more advanced stuff.

Now, don’t be disheartened by this. There’s nothing wrong with learning, and you’re totally fine to learn the basics at a skatepark, but if you’re gonna do that – think of these things:

• The least busy times
• Who might be there
• What can I do?

Simply put, if you want to use a skatepark to learn the basics, don’t go when it’s busy!

Pay Attention

There will likely be quite a few skaters in the skatepark, so you’ll need to be alert when you’re performing your tricks.

Others may crash into you, and you could crash into them, and nobody wants to get hurt, do they? So, just be aware of your surroundings when you’re in the area.

Don’t Snake

Snaking refers to dropping into another skater when they are right in the middle of a run. This is one of the biggest and most frequent reasons why crashes occur.

To avoid this, take a look at what the other skaters are doing and do not get in their way. This will keep you and them safe – and also avoid confrontation!

Don’t Be Scared Of Others

It can be quite daunting to turn up at a skatepark with experienced skaters, especially when they all seem older than you.

But don’t worry about them. Of course, you’ll want to be aware of them so you don’t get in their way but focus on your own game.

Remember, they’re at the skatepark so that they can skate. The majority of users simply want to enjoy their time.

Don’t Be Arrogant

Arrogance can cause conflict. Don’t laugh at other beginners if they get things wrong – or experienced skaters, for that matter.

Also, don’t try to do something crazy when you’ve got no experience; this could end up with you being seriously hurt.

Fallen? Get Up Quick!

You’re going to fall off from time to time, especially as a beginner. But don’t worry about it! You only need to remember that you have to get up immediately.

This will keep you safe from other skaters, and you’re not going to be in danger of anyone making fun of you either!

We’d also suggest, if you do fall, clench your hands into fists to help yourself back up. Fingers left splayed out are just asking to be run over.

Don’t Use The Flat Bowl

The flat bowl of the pool is out of bounds for skating – it’s simply a part of the drop. Make sure you stay well away from skating in the flat bowl.

On this point, too, it doesn’t matter if you’re skating, using your scooter, or roller skating – this area is a no-no.

Not only could you get hurt, but you’ll likely annoy some experienced skaters!

Warn Others

If your scooter or skateboard has gotten away from you – yell out “board!” to let other users know that there’s an object in the way which could potentially hurt someone.

This happens from time to time, so don’t think you’ve done anything wrong; it’s all good as long as you warn others.

Avoid Wax

Many beginners want to use the more advanced areas and wax up ramps and rails. We advise against that.

If you have to, though, always ask for permission from others.

Wax can be dangerous, and we advise roller skaters against using waxed areas, which could seriously cause your movement and injury.

Avoid Staying On The Coping

Coping areas need to be cleared as soon as you’ve finished because you’ll get in the way of other skaters – and could get hurt!

General Safety Advice

It doesn’t matter if you’re heading to the skatepark with a scooter, bike, skateboard, or roller skates – the above rules are important to think about as a beginner.

However, here’s some extra advice:

• Always know where your board, bike, or scooter is
• Always wear protective clothing, even if people try to talk you out of it

There are several types of skateboards, such as penny boards, longboards, cruiser boards, and street boards.

Each type offers its own benefits. For example, Penny boards are ideal for beginners because they are easy to ride and maneuver. On the other hand, longboards are usually more stable and safer so are good for long rides.

Neither a longboard nor a Penny board will be what your child needs if they want to pull tricks in a skate park. So let’s look at each in more detail to see if they’ll be right for your child.

Standard Penny Board

A Penny board is a small plastic skateboard made for cruising.

It’s important to note that there are various sizes of Penny boards available. In order to fairly compare a Penny board to a longboard, you need to understand these differences:

Differences Between Penny Boards And Longboards

Before we can determine which of these two options is best for a child, we need to understand exactly how they’re different from each other.

Longboard vs Penny Board: Size

Longboards are generally larger than Penny boards. This means that they have a longer wheelbase and wider stance. In addition, longboards typically weigh more than Penny boards.

The size differences between these two types of skateboards also affect how you will be able to ride them. For instance, Penny boards tend to be smaller in width and length, so easier to maneuver.

Smaller doesn’t necessarily mean better for kids; the larger deck of a longboard can provide a beginner with more stability.

Longboard vs Penny Board: Wheels

Another important factor when it comes to choosing between Penny boards and longboards is the wheels used.

While both types of skateboards use similar-sized wheels (larger than a regular skateboard), there are some subtle differences. Most longboards have larger, softer wheels, designed for all different terrains.

Longboard vs Penny Board: Stance

When it comes to stance, longboards have a wider stance than Penny boards. A wider stance allows you to stand farther away from the center of gravity of the board. This gives the rider more stability and balance.

Longboard vs Penny Board: Price

Contrary to the belief that Penny means cheap, you’ll find a Penny board costs about the same as a longboard for beginners – if not more.

There are cheaper small cruisers that come in at a price point substantially below that of an original Penny board.

Longboards are variable in price depending on what type you go for and if it’s ready-built and off the shelf or custom-made.

There are a lot of ways you can customize your longboard. Depending on the parts you use, and the labor cost if you’re getting a skate shop to build your first ride for you, then the longboard can end up costing a lot more than a Penny board.

An off-the-shelf longboard though will set you back about $50 to $100 USD, whilst an original Penny board is likely to cost you more like $100 to $150 USD.

Should I Buy A Penny Board Or A Longboard?

The choice between these two types of skateboards mostly depends on your child’s skill level and personal preference. Unless you are looking at a longboard Penny board, they are really two quite distinctly different skateboarding experiences.

In helping your child choose the right type of skateboard for them, they may want to consider are they riding with friends or alone?

• If they are planning to ride and cruise along with friends, then a longboard is preferential.
• If they will ride alone, then a Penny board might be a great choice for a solo rider that will neatly fit away in their bag.

Size is also another important factor, that is your child’s size, taking into account the size of the deck:

• Standard Penny boards are quite narrow (7.5″). This can work well for a beginner with small feet, but they take a bit of skill to balance.
• A longboard has a wider deck which is more stable and easier to balance on, but harder to maneuver or do tricks on.
• Longboards are a lot heavier. A child beginner may find a longboard too heavy to carry.

Of course, there are many other factors to take into consideration such as material composition (e.g., carbon or cedar), color, graphics, hardware, and brand, but these are just a few examples.

Each type offers something unique. Work through with your child what they love about trying out skateboarding. If the opportunity is there, try standing on a few boards in a shop before you make your final skateboard buying decision.

And remember – if your kid really picks up on skating they’re bound to end up with more than one board for different purposes! Make sure their first board is one they can easily learn on and develop a passion for the sport.

In this guide, we’ll be taking a look at how longboards are made and why they can make a great choice for beginners.

How To Choose A Good Longboard For Beginners

A longboard looks a little different from a regular skateboard that you may see at a skate park.

Let’s look at the key features of a longboard so you can tell what one looks like, and therefore how it functions for a beginner learning to ride.

Longboard Deck Size & Shape

The deck – that’s the part the riders stand on – varies significantly between a longboard and a standard skateboard.

• Skateboards have a slight concave on the nose and tail. A longboard is completely flat (though some models also have a drop deck – the part where the feet go is lower than the ends where the wheels go).
• Longboards are generally speaking (but not always!) longer than a regular skateboard. Most longboards are at least 32 inches long, even up to 60 inches!
• Longboards vary in width but are generally 8 inches to 10 inches wide.
• Longboards have thicker decks with less flex than skateboards, usually made from wood – 7 to 9-ply maple or bamboo.
• Longboards can vary greatly in shape, including hybrid, pintail, and drop-deck designs, or cruiser designs similar to regular skateboards (more on longboard types and shape below!).

Longboard Wheels

The next important factor is the wheels.

• A longboard has larger, softer wheels than a regular skateboard for a smoother and faster ride on all sorts of terrain.
• They are usually rated 78A to 85A on the “durometer scale“, meaning they can absorb vibrations better than harder wheels you’ll find on a regular skateboard.
• The wheels can vary from 55mm to 75mm.

Longboard Trucks & Wheelbase

Next, check out the trucks. These are the parts that hold the wheels together. They have a lot of impact on how well a longboard performs.

• Longboards have a more flexible truck than a regular skateboard to give a smoother ride.
• Longboard trucks tend to be wider than skateboards – around 150 to 180 mm (5.9″ to 7″).
• You may hear the trucks being referred to as “reverse Kingpin”, this is the preferred style of trucks on boards over 32″, designed for speed.
• You should choose trucks with an aluminum core. Aluminum provides strength and durability, which means that your longboard will last longer.
• A longer wheelbase generally accompanies a longer board – meaning the wheels are further apart providing more stability.
• You should also make sure that the wheel bearings used are top quality. Cheap bearings won’t last very long and may even damage your board.

Longboards Vs Skateboards For Beginners

It is essential when deciding on a board for a new rider to understand their riding intention; your child may not actually know what they want yet, other than a “skateboard”. Here are a few things to think about:

• Longboards are ideal for cruising around town, riding at pace and tackling hills, whilst skateboards are designed mostly for doing tricks.

• Due to the stability and smooth ride offered by a longboard, they can be a better starting point for a complete beginner.

• Longboards are the best choice if your child wants a new set of wheels for getting to school or cruising about with friends.

• If mastering kickflips and grinding rails are in their sights, then you may be better starting them with a regular skateboard.

The basic manoeuvers of standing, starting, and stopping on the board will be the same regardless of what type of board your child starts with.

If you are starting them with skateboarding lessons in a skate park, the instructor will no doubt sway you towards a skateboard!

Longboard Types

Now we know a little more about longboards compared with traditional skateboards, it’s important to distinguish between the different types of longboards for beginners.

Not all longboard designs will suit a complete beginner but equally many longboards share similarities with cruisers and skateboards! Try to find the type of skateboard that packs in the most features your beginner will use.

Cruiser Longboards

These are the best type of longboards for beginners. They are long, wide, and easy to balance on with large, soft wheels.

We compare longboards to smaller cruiser boards over here – the terminology can certainly get confusing if you’re brand new to skateboard buying!

Freestyle Longboards

These are closer in design to traditional skateboards and would suit those who still want to do some flip tricks and carving. They can still work for beginners as the deck is large and wide for easy balance.

They also have soft wheels, though not as soft as cruisers. You’ll find some freestyle boards are designed with kicktails and shaped noses to allow your beginner to work up to some tricks.

Downhill Longboards

These are not for beginners! Your child will most definitely need a lot of practice before attempting downhill skating where skaters can reach speeds up to 65mph!

These are normally stiffer longboards with lower-angle trucks and are only suitable for those who really know what they’re doing and have all the accompanying protective gear including specialized downhill skating helmets.

Freeride Longboards

Boards that combine elements of downhill with freestyle, they’ll have more flex than a downhill-only board. They have harder smaller wheels designed for sliding.

Again, Freeride longboards are probably not something your beginner longboarder will need to consider just yet.

Importance of Longboard Deck Shape

• Longboards such as pin tail are considered “one directional” – they are designed to go forward, most commonly seen on cruisers and downhill boards.
• Conversely, a twin or symmetrical longboard is great for 180 degree slides, more commonly seen in freeriding and freestyle boards.
• Some longboards will have cutouts for the wheels and drop-mounted trucks (on top). Other longboards see the deck covering the wheels, these are called “top mount longboards”.
• Drop through longboards lower the deck height, which can increase the stability of the board.
• A drop-deck on the other hand, the board is actually lowered between the trucks. The rider’s feet are nearer to the ground which helps with pushing and stability, considered the best style for commuting.
• One more deck type you may see on a longboard is a double drop; it features both drop through trucks and a drop deck style. You’ll largely see this style only on downhill boards built for maximum stability.

What Is The Best Deck Size For Beginners?

When choosing a skateboard for beginners in general, the smaller the deck size, the easier it will be for a child to learn how to ride.

• For a complete beginner, you should probably stick with an 8-inch wide deck. This is a decent size to keep the rider stable but still provide a decent amount of maneuverability.
• If they plan to use the board for commuting purposes, opt for a shorter model. The reason is that these are easier to maneuver and control in crowds.
• Longer longboards are inherently going to be heavier than say a smaller cruiser board. This is fine for a strapping young teen, but if you’re looking for a preteen or younger, you may want to choose a shorter board for a beginner.

Are Longboards Appropriate For Smaller Kids?

When you first see a longboard the size may seem daunting – especially those 40″ plus! Rest assured, not all longboards are huge, in fact, some longboards are even shorter than traditional skateboards!

Whilst there’s no set rule on how long or heavy a child’s longboard should be, the child still needs to have enough weight to leverage the board and make a turn. For a child under 10, you should start with boards under 36″ as a general rule of thumb, and slightly smaller wheels (60-66mm is about right).

A smaller child could get started on something like a 28.5″ Landyachtz Blunt longboard.

Do note that the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that skateboarding and longboarding are not appropriate before the age of 5.

How Much Does A Beginner Longboard Cost?

The average price of a beginner longboard ranges between $50-$100. Of course, you can spend more or less depending on the features you need.

For example, you can pay more for a carbon fiber deck as opposed to a wooden one, but does your beginner really need this?

What You Want To Use It For

The most common material used for skateboarding is plastic. This is because plastic is durable, lightweight, and relatively inexpensive.

It can also be easily shaped into different shapes, which makes it perfect for creating your own unique designs on the board.

However, plastic boards have one major drawback – they get dirty really fast! If you’re planning on skating around town, then plastic might not be the best choice.

But if you plan on using your board at parks, beaches, pools, and other places where there isn’t much going on, then plastic is probably just fine.

• The first step in cleaning a plastic board is to remove any stickers, tape, or residue from the surface. Use rubbing alcohol to wipe away any dirt or grease.

• You may need to apply some pressure with a rag so that all the sticky residue comes off. After this process, let the board air dry before moving on to the next step.

If the skateboard doesn’t fit your child, they can easily be left frustrated with the lack of functionality or difficulty to maneuvered the way they want.

We’re going to talk you through typical ages and height, as well as shoe sizing to determine the right size skateboard for your child.

Cruiser vs Skateboard Vs Longboard

Before we get into the size of the board, its important we distinguish upfront that there’s a subtle difference between skateboards, depending on the riders purpose.

Does your child predominantly want their skateboard for cruising and as a means of transport, or is it for taking to the skate park and learning tricks?

Whilst the smaller-sized cruiser skateboards or penny boards might seem like the ideal solution for a smaller child, their not going to be the most appropriate for pulling tricks and street skating.

A longboard is a great choice if your kid, say, plans to ride it to school every day as it is longer and wider than a street skateboard for a comfortable ride over all sorts of terrains.

We compare cruisers to longboards over here if it’s a transport type of skateboard you’re looking for.

We’re going to assume for the remainder of this article we’re talking about traditional street skateboards and park boards. They’re distinguished by their unique “popsicle” shape and smaller, harder wheels.

Kids Skateboard Size Chart

When looking for a child’s skateboard, your focus should primarily be on the width of the board, rather than the length, your child’s age or their preference for a particular cool design!

We would caution that these ages are an approximation! Of course, kids come in all shapes and sizes.

There is no hard and fast rule, and certainly most manufacturers don’t tend to label their boards as micro, mini, mid etc. If you have a much taller child they will comfortably fit in the next size up board, especially if they also have large feet.

Let’s look at each size skateboard in more detail.

Micro Skateboard

• Deck Width 6.” to 6.5”
• Approximate Height 3’ 4” and under
• US shoe size little kids 1 and under
• Ideal for kids aged 5 or younger

When your child is ready to ride a skateboard, usually from around 5 years of age, they will need a smaller skateboard to begin with.

Generally speaking, young kids have a smaller feet, we’re talking up to a size 1, and will require the narrowest of decks.

They may have a preference at this age for a smaller, lighter penny board or mini 22″ cruiser. These look attractive and come in multiple different colorful and appealing designs, but note they are also shorter as well as narrower. They can require a fair bit of skill and practice for your child to get their balance.

If your child is keen to start skate park skateboarding early, don’t settle on cheap skateboards from the department store. You need to track down a proper micro skateboard with a wider deck – approximately 6″ to 6.5″ will help with stability.

Mini Skateboard

• Deck Width 7.0” to 7.5”
• Approximate Height 3’ 5” to 4’4″
• US shoe size little kids 2 to 5
• Ideal for kids aged 6 to 8 years

This is the next step up and the classic size that most kids will start out on when first learning to skateboard. The slightly wider deck is ideal for learning how to stand on a skateboard.

It is hard to find a true micro skateboard for this age category, typically most are cruisers. They are distinguished by the pointed nose and tapered end.

If you cannot find a suitable mini skateboard that has the deck width, consider whether they are ready to skip this stage and head straight to a mid-size.

Mid Size Skateboard

• Deck Width 7.5” to 8”
• Approximate Height 4’5″ to 5’2″
• US Shoe size 6 to 8
• Ideal for preteens 9 to 12 years old

A mid size skateboard is a great transition skateboard for your slightly older kids. They will vary greatly in exact dimensions, but generally, we’re talking any skateboards that are not quite full-size. They tend to be between 7.5″ and 8″ wide and up to 31″ in length.

If your pre-teen is quite tall or large footed, you could well skip straight o the full size board. We’d recommend getting them into a skate shop and testing out what feels the most comfortable for them.

Full Size Skateboard

• Deck Width 8” plus
• Approximate Height 5.3″ plus
• US Shoe size 9 plus
• Ideal for 13 years plus

A full size skateboard will suit your growing teen. As we know, their feet tend to grow first so as soon as their feet are ready for a full width board, its time to open the door to the full adult range.

Note that even if your girls feet aren’t as large as a size 9, its fine to consider a full size board once she’s over 5’3″ approximately – most sizing guides unfortunately do seem to skew to males!

This can sometimes make the decision even harder as there is so much choice, and a lot of jargon out there I bet you’re minds already boggling how much their is to learn!

Size factors to consider buying a kids beginner skateboard

So now we know the broad size categories skateboards come in, let’s take a deeper look at why each factor matters in your skateboard buying decision.

Why does skateboard width matter?

 The width is really important for children especially as its critical to balance – the key element of riding a skateboard is staying upright!!

If the board you select is too skinny, you will find there is less stability and more likelihood of flipping. A skinnier deck is more nimble though for flip tricks, ledges and technical skating. But is this realistically going to be your beginner?

Conversely, if your board is too fat, it can be too heavy for your child. It will offer them more stability but be too hard to flip if doing tricks is on their agenda. A wider board works better on ramps or in skate parks.

If your child prefers the stability of a wider board, it might be a longboard that they’re after rather than a traditional street skateboard. Just be aware, if you’re buying a skateboard for the comfort in riding, it won’t really be appropriate for skate parks.

If you had to err one way of the other, we’d say go with a wider deck. It will help them find their balance and get going with confidence sooner.

What’s the importance of skateboard deck length?

A longer deck gives more stability but is less maneuverable. Conversely the shorter deck is less stable but more maneuverable.

Some kids do like to starter with the smaller cruiser boards for this reason; they’re great for hanging out with mates, riding the footpaths and weaving around obstacles.

It can come down to personal preference when it comes to length. You want your child to be able to maintain a good stance.

Does Wheel Base size matter on a kids skateboard?

You’ll find on kids skateboards the wheel base, that’s the length between the wheels will increase proportionately based on deck size.

Once your child is really familiar with their board, they may have specific riding needs in mind.

A long wheelbase leaves more space between your trucks and gives a wider stance. It makes it easier to do tricks but gives you less yield. Conversely, a shorter deck can handle sharper turns making it more maneuverable.

Unless your kids is super serious about their skateboarding – as in getting to competition level – wheel base is unlikely to factor into your first skateboard purchase decision.

We would recommend you stick to the manufacturers standard wheel base.

Kids Skateboard Wheel Size

Again, you can interchange your skateboards wheels if you’re going for a custom build. However, in most cases, if you’re buying a skateboard off the shelf, it will already have the right size wheels fit for purpose for that size and type of board.

The most common wheel sizes you’ll find on skateboards are:

50 to 53 mm – These provide a stable ride and are designed for small children who shouldn’t be going too fast.
54 to 59 mm – Average sized wheels for beginners and slightly older children.
60 mm+ – These are designed to be faster and recommended only once your child has experience in riding.

You may also hear wheel “durometer” scale mentioned, this is how hard the wheels are. For street and park skating, you want harder urethane wheels that work well on smooth surfaces.

Softer wheels are better for cruisers and rougher terrains.

And all the other bits – skateboard features

Oh its super confusing, I know! We spent more hours than you’d believe asking questions in skateboard shops. And its not that the staff don’t know there stuff – its just that most don’t have kids and understand their techie specs too well leaving us parents feeling overwhelmed!

Other things you might hear mentioned describing a skateboards features:

• Truck size (this is the part that sits under your skateboard and houses the axel which holds on the wheels. They can be varied in size)
• Bearings (this is what allows the wheels to roll and determines how smooth and fast the wheels rotate)
• Grip tape (the rough material that helps keep your feet from slipping on the top of the deck)
• Deck material (usually described as how layers, you are looking for plywood or maple wood – you don’t want plastic for a skate park)

All of these whilst yes, very important to how a skateboard functions, are not your primary concern for a kids beginner skateboard. You can fairly safely assume that these things all come as standard.

The only thing that may make a small difference and worth considering is deck shape. As we mentioned at the outset, a “popsicle” shape is the traditional skateboard shape with a small curve at the nose and tail. The deck can come be flat of come with a slight concave – we’d honestly only worry about this once your child is moving up in ability.

When is my child ready to upgrade skateboard size?

If your child already has a skateboard and is begging for a new one, the most obvious sign they’re ready to upgrade is that they’re going through a growth spurt. You’ll no doubt suddenly see them outgrowing shoes, and basically doing nothing but eat, sleep, skate repeat! 

Critically, when they hit around 4’4″ (134cm) –  this is a sign that a mini board is no longer going to meet their needs and you need to be looking into mid-sized boards.

Similarly, once they’ve hit 5’3″ (160cm), it’s time to start looking at full size boards that should last them through until their teens.

If they have been avid users of their first board, you may also find wear and tear over time – it’s natural; a well-used skateboard even with good maintenance won’t last forever.

Before rushing out for a new skateboard, determine whether its a matter of wear and tear. Can the parts be repaired or replaced? Or have they actually outgrown their old board (or realized it can’t do what their friends does!? Likely this is no.1 reason!)

DO base it on their height and feet size, as supposed to their age; this is far more critical in a comfortable ride and getting their stance right.

Whilst it might have ‘pro’ in the name, this skateboard is actually pretty good for beginners, and it does not break the bank either. These things make it a perfect skateboard to invest in as your first one without compromising on quality.

The skateboard was designed to take you through your skateboarding journey. Whilst you might feel like a beginner, the board has been created, so you do not feel like one. This means that you can take it with you for years to come. 

Having taken it to the skate park, nobody had any idea it was a skateboard designed for a newcomer.

It can hold up to 220 pounds, with a 7.75 by 31.25-inch deck. This means it can take up to a size 12 shoe! The Flexi 7-ply maple wood of the deck is durable enough to last and not scuff as you practice tricks.

It has ABEC-7 bearings that include 54 mm injected PU wheels which add grip as well as smooth speed. The trucks are made out of T6 aluminum with carbon steel axles for extra support.

The designs are a little ‘cutesy’, which may put some people off – think cats and ducks. They do stand out and are still cool to take to the local skate park. Also, whilst it says it is suitable for boys and girls, they are also aimed at novice adults too. This might explain the cute style of artwork.

South Bay Co-Premium Beginner ‘The Charger’ Skateboard

Another beginner skateboard, and again, you cannot tell it has been specifically designed for beginners in mind. A little more pricey than the Arcade Pro and a wider board, the South Bay Charger skateboard has a subtle design that will suit everyone’s tastes.

The premium heavy deck is made from 7-layers of maple wood. It also includes 5.25-inch INDE trucks along with 52 mm by 32 mm SHR-102A wheels which have ABEC-7 chromium steel bearings. This helps the skateboard glide effortlessly along.

The wheels feel stable and allow for doing tricks with ease, such as ollies. It has a classic look and does not stand out too much when taking it out in public.

The skateboard includes a clear grip tape deck instead of the standard black. This means the design flows from underneath the deck and over the top, showcasing the wood and giving it an overall natural aesthetic. 

Some may even say the design is a little too simplistic and may want something with a bit more color.

Muevelo Beginner Cruiser Skateboard

Whilst not a skateboard per se, it is still a type of skateboard. A cruiser can be great for beginners because it allows for better control of speed, and ease of moving around corners.

The 100% maple wood deck is durable enough to take around with you. At 27 inches long and 7.5 inches wide, it is smaller than a standard skateboard, but this will make it easier to carry around – also because it only weighs 5 pounds.

The wheels look really interesting due to every one of them being a different color. It has real appeal for the younger rider. They are made from polyurethane which is strong to use out on sidewalks, ensuring it will last for a long time.

The built-in super shock absorber and high-speed ABEC-7 bearings make it great for use on bumpy surfaces too. In fact, it felt really smooth and glided well along sidewalk cracks. 

This cruiser is suitable for children and makes a fantastic first skateboard option. However, the cruiser is not the best option if you want to do tricks. It has been made for use on the sidewalk rather than as a board to grind a rail.

PHNHOLUN Standard Beginner Skateboard

A budget-friendly skateboard that has great quality can be difficult to find, but we think we have done it. The PHNHOLUN skateboard is beginner-friendly without compromising on quality. 

With 8-layers of maple wood, it has a strong deck that can hold up to 220 pounds worth of weight. The size is 31 by 8 inches, making it a good standard length and width for any skateboarding newbie over around 5’3″ tall.

It has a built-in anti-shock system to allow for a smooth ride and PU wheels alongside ABEC-11 precision bearings and PU bushings to provide much better balance control. It did exactly what it said, making sure you could do a quick ollie and smoothly turn a corner. 

Whilst it is on the lower end of the pricing spectrum, it certainly met our expectations as a good skateboard for beginners. There are undoubtedly better boards out there that will cost you more money. However, overall, this is a fantastic beginner skateboard for a budget price.

• Great standard size – at 31 by 8 inches, holding up to 220 pounds of weight, it is a good size for any skateboarding beginner

Apollo Longboard Skateboard

Another skateboard that’s a little different your average skateboard, but this time instead of a cruiser, it is a longboard (we go into more depth about the difference between longboards and cruisers over here).

As you might have guessed, it is longer than a skateboard at 39 inches in length and 8.75 inches in width. It provides extra flexibility whilst you are out cruising.

The Apollo longboard’s deck is made with 3-layers of bamboo to provide extra flexibility. There is also fiberglass added for even more flexibility, as well as stability. 

Alongside the decking is aircraft aluminum trucks that are both lightweight and durable, making it a perfect option for when you are out on the sidewalk. Also, the chrome steel bearings help to make the ride completely stable. 

The 51 mm HR83A wheels are medium-hard and provide super grip to avoid the longboard sliding everywhere. They allow you to easily maneuver along the streets with ease. 

Whilst the longboard is great for beginners, some people may find it a little too big, especially if you are small in size. Also, if you want to do tricks, stick with a standard skateboard. Just like with the cruiser, this has been designed to take you around rather than to do tricks with.

• Bamboo and fiberglass – provides extra flexibility as well as something different to maple wood
• Great for cruising – will take you from A to B
• Attractive design – with many more to choose from

Cons

• Size – it may be a bit too big for most younger kids to find comfortable, its more suited to older teens

Beginner Skateboard Buyer’s Guide

Skateboards are a great way to get fit and help you go from A to B without using a car or a bicycle. So now that you know what some of the best beginner skateboards are, here is a quick buyer’s guide to help you decipher the key areas when you are looking to buy a skateboard. 

Skateboard Size

When you first look at buying your child a skateboard, we’re guessing size isn’t the first thing on their mind, but it is the most important.

Usually, a standard skateboard has a length of around 31″-32″ inches and a deck width of around 8 inches. At first, this is a good size for practically anybody.  Look a little deeper though and you’ll see kids skateboard size needs differ.

Over time, if your child really enjoys skateboarding, you might want to start to think about investing in a skateboard that matches their ability. This means buying a board that feels comfortable to use for their size and something that allows them to perform the tasks they want it to.

You could also think about either moving onto a small cruiser or a longboard – whatever suits you best!

Skateboard Deck Material

Once you’ve established the deck size, the material of the skateboard deck is the next thing you should take note of. If it is plastic, then move along (unless its specially a small cruiser such as a penny board you’re in the market for)

For a street skateboard, what you are looking for is maple wood or bamboo – basically something strong, sturdy and durable that will be able to take the hard knocks.

A deck usually has several layers of the material, depending on what it is. This just shows how strong it is. So with maple wood, you might see the skateboard has around 7 layers.

Bamboo may cost less, but that does not mean it is not as good as maple wood – it is!

Skateboard Wheels

You are interested primarily in the skateboard’s wheel size and hardness (though yes, color may play into your final decision!)

Skateboard wheels material

Avoid really hard plastic or ultra-soft rubber for a beginner’s skateboard. The best wheels are made from PU (Polyurethane). This material will give the skateboard better grip and durability. 

You likely come across a “durometer” rating describing skateboard wheels This ranks wheels on a sliding scale out of 100 – with 100A being the hardest.

Generally speaking, harder wheels are faster and better for smooth surfaces like skate parks. Softer wheels are slower and have more grip, they’re better for street skating and rougher terrain.

Skateboard wheel size

Wheel diameter will vary by skateboard purpose – what sort of skateboard, what you want your skateboard to do, and terrain. As a general guide:

50 to 53 mm – Small wheels give a stable ride on flat surfaces, they’re best for small children’s boards that shouldn’t be going too fast.
54 to 59 mm – Average-sized wheels for beginners and slightly older children, this size will give you a good mix between speed and acceleration.
60 mm+ – Larger wheels are designed to be faster and recommended only once your child has experience in riding, you’ll normally only find wheels this large on longboards.

Wheelbase and Trucks

You also want the trucks (the part under the board that holds the axis) to be made out of metal and not plastic. Keep your eye on small details like these if you want a skateboard that allows for better balance and strength. You do not want it to fall apart within your child’s first month of using it!

Skateboard Price

Whilst you might be mistaken to think that the more expensive the skateboard is the better it will be, you could not be further from the truth.

There are plenty of budget-friendly options for skateboards. These should not be ignored when you are a beginner. An expensive skateboard might seem like the best choice, but it actually might be better to start off with something less expensive. 

We certainly started on an inexpensive cruiser with our kids. It quickly became apparent they couldn’t do tricks in the skate park and lacked the stability to ride them, so we soon after had to invest in street skateboards.

The reality is until your kid gets going on 4 wheels, it will be hard to know what they like best. We’d suggest, if possible, they borrow someone’s board or rent a board from a skate park before purchasing their own. The skateboard should, of course, be of high quality, but it still does not have to break the bank and empty your wallet. So long as it has a good build is not full of hard plastic, you’re on the right track.

You will not be surprised to know that skateboards come in many, many different sizes. Like everything else, you will want to buy a skateboard that suits your child’s build. It is a little like a bike; you would not ride a bike that is too big or small.

How To Start Skateboarding As A Beginner?

Skateboarding is a sport that requires a lot of practice to master. You need to be able to skate backward as well as forwards. To do this, you must learn how to turn around quickly while keeping your balance.
