However, you may decide to go for a split-core hub which can make it easier for you or your child to change the wheels. This will be the option to consider if your child will regularly change what they use the scooter for. 

Child’s Weight 

As with most scooters, the weight of the rider has to be a consideration, as there will be a maximum weight limit that the scooter can withstand.

If you want the longest possible life for your child’s dirt scooter, then you may wish to look for a dirt scooter that can take heavier weights, allowing your child to grow through to adulthood with the scooter.

However, it’s important to note that sometimes, to accommodate heavier weights, the manufacturer will use heavier materials that improve the strength of the scooter.

The short answer is that some electric scooters might be allowed on a plane. However, it will depend on the size and type of battery used, along with the airline’s permission specifically.

Electric Scooters And Planes 

One of the reasons it can be tricky to know whether or not you can bring electric scooters on a plane is where you might be traveling to and from.

The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) in the United States sets out a list of specifications for the types and sizes of batteries that may be allowed onto flights.

However, the rules differ from region to region. For example, China has extremely strict rules on electronic items on planes.  You can find IATA Guidance on Lithium Batteries here.

For the purposes of this guide, we will focus on US domestic flights., governed by the FAA.

The current Federal Aviation Administration guidelines state that electric scooters are okay to go on planes, assuming they use a lithium or lithium-ion battery under 100WH. 

If the battery is between 100WH and 160WH, the passenger must get the airline’s explicit permission to take an electric scooter on the plane, and any batteries higher than 160WH are prohibited entirely for safety reasons. 

This is not to say that they can’t be transported, though. If, for some reason, you must transport an electric scooter with a battery over 160WH, then you can – but it must be done in the correct way.

These will be shipped using specialist freighter companies, and they will label the contents as hazardous materials. This is because batteries can have the potential to catch fire, and in some settings – they could even explode. 

You may be wondering how electronic items like laptops and smartphones can easily be allowed on flights, and this is because the batteries comply with FAA regulations and airline permissions.

Do I Need To Contact The Airline?

It is always advisable to contact the airline if you are planning to bring your child’s electric scooter with you.

They will help you understand the battery size and whether or not you must go through specific channels to check the scooter in.

Remember, if you plan to get a connecting flight – you need to contact both airlines before you start your journey. 

Can Electric Scooters Be Brought On Board?

The airline will likely not allow you to bring an electric scooter on the flight to place underneath your seat or in the overhead compartment. 

Some electronic items, such as electric skateboards, can be brought into the plane and placed underneath the seat or in the overhead compartment, depending on their size and battery. 

However, even then, it will be done at the discretion of the airline. This is why you should be sure to contact the airline first and discuss your needs and plans with them. 

If an electric scooter is not allowed onto the flight this way, they may need to be checked in officially along with your luggage. 

A Possible Problem 

One problem you may find is that a lot of electric scooters have batteries that far exceed 160WH.

This isn’t to say that you can’t find electric scooters that are smaller than this, but a common problem is that they are large batteries.

As we mentioned, you cannot bring an electronic item with a battery of 160WH or over onto a flight. However, you may still be allowed to bring the scooter on board if you remove the battery and leave it at home.

Of course, you’d need to purchase a replacement battery at your destination, but this is one way you could still bring an electric scooter with you.

How To Pack Electric Scooters For Flights 

If you are able to take your child’s electric scooter, assuming the airline is okay with it and the battery is not too large – then you will need to know how to pack them correctly.

Electric scooters are renowned for being excellent items to pack and fold away. It’s advisable that you purchase an electric scooter carry case. Some people may decide to pack the scooter into their suitcases, though you may find electric scooters are longer than a standard hard-sided suitcase.

While an electric scooter may fit inside a suitcase, it is not the best option for checking in the scooter as it may take longer to get through security. 

Being open and transparent about what you carry is the best option – so ensure you carry your child’s electric scooter in its own carry case. This is also why it is advisable to contact the airline first.

Unless you remove the battery due to its size, avoid tampering with it before it is checked in, and do not try to carry the battery on board separately.

It is possible that the airline may refuse your travel if you attempt this, and tampering with batteries can be dangerous.

The Wheelie

When your kid is riding their scooter in manual mode, they will be able to perform some basic tricks to get them started – and the most basic trick to perform is the wheelie.

While it might look a little tough to do, it’s actually pretty simple to get to grips with.

They must first place their feet in the center of the scooter and keep their balance using their hands on the handlebars.

Slowly begin to shift their weight to the back of the scooter, lifting the handlebars up.

The most important aspect of this trick is keeping the handlebars in one position when lifting the scooter.

If the handlebars move, performing the wheelie will be much more difficult as their balance can shift quickly.

The Bunny Hop

This trick is a twist on the classic BMX jump trick. Once again, this is one of the easiest tricks that your kid can try to master.

All they need to do is pick up a little speed and keep their hands on the handlebars.

They will then need to bend their knees until they’re in the center of the frame and then jump vertically, remembering to keep their hands on the handlebars!

The more force they jump up with, the higher they will propel themselves vertically, and it’s actually very surprising how high you can go with this trick.

Over time, kids can get this trick down to perfection and be able to add some extra “spin” to this, which we’ll look at next.

The Tail Whip

The tail whip is not easy for beginners, but it can be done with a little practice.

The first thing to do is to ensure they’ve mastered the bunny hop first, because it provides the foundations of this.

The tail whip essentially twists the platform 360 degrees during a hop and then place your feet back into their original position.

To learn this trick, your child will need to pick up a little speed first and then get ready to perform a bunny hop.

Once they’ve got to this position, jump and, at the same time, kick the platform with their back feet.

This will spin the platform all the way around quickly, and they will be able to place the “kicking foot” back onto the platform when it returns – all done in one smooth movement.

This is where the practice needs to come in because the timing is difficult to master rather than the technique.

Backwards Riding

Riding backward on a scooter might sound pretty simple, but it takes much more practice than you’d think!

To perform this trick, the rider will need to be able to go up a slight incline in order to reverse.

Once they have gone up the incline, do not move and simply allow the scooter to go backward slowly.

Keep the handlebars in one solid position and leave your feet flat on the surface of the scooter.

Once this has been mastered, extra tricks can be performed – including the ones above but backwards!

The Nose Pivot

The nose pivot, which is also known as the 360-degree pivot, is one of the top beginner tricks which takes some time to get right.

For kids to master this, it’s all about getting the balance and foot positioning right.

To start the trick, you must get a little speed going and keep your balance in the scooter’s center.

When you’re ready to start the trick, prepare yourself and move your back foot to the back wheel cover.

Then, move your weight to the back and move your arm weight to the left of the handlebars.

This will begin to spin the scooter to the left, so you will need to hold on and keep your balance.

Eventually, the scooter will go all the way around in a 360-degree angle.

Guidelines And Advice For Scooter Tricks

Kids hoping to master some of these tricks listed above should remember to follow some basic guidance and advice to remain safe when they’re out there.

Bear these points in mind:

• Always wear protective gear
• Avoid bike lanes – this will prevent a potential crash

• Do not perform “high air” tricks as a beginner

The Basics

The guidance we’ll give you can be useful for anybody that has never been to a skatepark before. We’d also like to add some advice to parents before we begin.

If your kid is quite young, it’s a good idea to go with them to the skatepark and stay in the vicinity until they’re finished. Remember to take the below points into consideration, though!

And as always – regardless of your age, it’s critical that you wear safety gear!

Not Skating? Stay Out!

The first piece of advice to give is that it is so easy for people to get in the way without realizing it.

This can be very frustrating for other skaters when there are others in the way – so if you’re not doing anything, take a seat out of the way!

This is not just for etiquette reasons but for safety reasons too. You could get seriously hurt if you’re in the way, and so could the other skaters.

So, it’s best just to move away if you’re not gonna skate right away.

Have A Plan

You’ll probably be aware of your skills and how good you are right now at skating. If, however, you’re thinking of learning the basics at a skatepark – you might need to come up with a plan.

Skate parks are usually busy places, so you don’t want to be in the way of learning the very basics when there are others ready to do the more advanced stuff.

Now, don’t be disheartened by this. There’s nothing wrong with learning, and you’re totally fine to learn the basics at a skatepark, but if you’re gonna do that – think of these things:

• The least busy times
• Who might be there
• What can I do?

Simply put, if you want to use a skatepark to learn the basics, don’t go when it’s busy!

Pay Attention

There will likely be quite a few skaters in the skatepark, so you’ll need to be alert when you’re performing your tricks.

Others may crash into you, and you could crash into them, and nobody wants to get hurt, do they? So, just be aware of your surroundings when you’re in the area.

Don’t Snake

Snaking refers to dropping into another skater when they are right in the middle of a run. This is one of the biggest and most frequent reasons why crashes occur.

To avoid this, take a look at what the other skaters are doing and do not get in their way. This will keep you and them safe – and also avoid confrontation!

Don’t Be Scared Of Others

It can be quite daunting to turn up at a skatepark with experienced skaters, especially when they all seem older than you.

But don’t worry about them. Of course, you’ll want to be aware of them so you don’t get in their way but focus on your own game.

Remember, they’re at the skatepark so that they can skate. The majority of users simply want to enjoy their time.

Don’t Be Arrogant

Arrogance can cause conflict. Don’t laugh at other beginners if they get things wrong – or experienced skaters, for that matter.

Also, don’t try to do something crazy when you’ve got no experience; this could end up with you being seriously hurt.

Fallen? Get Up Quick!

You’re going to fall off from time to time, especially as a beginner. But don’t worry about it! You only need to remember that you have to get up immediately.

This will keep you safe from other skaters, and you’re not going to be in danger of anyone making fun of you either!

We’d also suggest, if you do fall, clench your hands into fists to help yourself back up. Fingers left splayed out are just asking to be run over.

The flat bowl of the pool is out of bounds for skating – it’s simply a part of the drop. Make sure you stay well away from skating in the flat bowl.

On this point, too, it doesn’t matter if you’re skating, using your scooter, or roller skating – this area is a no-no.

Not only could you get hurt, but you’ll likely annoy some experienced skaters!

Warn Others

If your scooter or skateboard has gotten away from you – yell out “board!” to let other users know that there’s an object in the way which could potentially hurt someone.

This happens from time to time, so don’t think you’ve done anything wrong; it’s all good as long as you warn others.

Avoid Wax

Many beginners want to use the more advanced areas and wax up ramps and rails. We advise against that.

If you have to, though, always ask for permission from others.

Wax can be dangerous, and we advise roller skaters against using waxed areas, which could seriously cause your movement and injury.

Avoid Staying On The Coping

Coping areas need to be cleared as soon as you’ve finished because you’ll get in the way of other skaters – and could get hurt!

General Safety Advice

It doesn’t matter if you’re heading to the skatepark with a scooter, bike, skateboard, or roller skates – the above rules are important to think about as a beginner.

You also have to consider the width of the bar when looking at scooters. A narrow bar allows you to accomplish more technical maneuvers such as the bar spin, but a broader bar does not let you do this. When buying for a child, however, you do not want the bars wider than their shoulders.

Scooter Fork

The fork on a scooter is the integral component that connects the deck, bar, and front wheel. On a store-bought scooter, you will have the fork already included as part of the scooter.

The larger the wheel, the faster your scooter will go.

When it comes to materials – yes, you want your ride to look cool and aesthetically pleasing, but more importantly, durable.

Most wheels are made of a Urethane outer for speed, but the core can be made from plastic or metal. The metal core wheels will be more durable for stunts and tricky maneuvers.

Bearings 

Bearings are the seven or eight balls in the center of your wheels. These are identified by ABEC numbers that reflect the degree of precision with which they are created, such as AEBC-2, ABEC-1, etc. The higher the number, the more precise the bearings.

After each use, you do not need to clean the bearings, but you may dry and clean them if they are a bit wet. Additionally, avoid lubricating these bearings since harmful contaminants can form and attach to the surface, posing a health risk to the rider.

Compression system

This is the lingo we started to get lost in when purchasing our first skate park scooter! But trust us, the compression system is crucial. it maintains stability between the deck, bars, and fork. If this connection isn’t stable, it can lead to your child quickly damaging their scooter.

Beware cheap scooters that use a threaded compression system that is considered less durable; if your kid wants to get serious with their skate park scooter, look for scooters with an inverted compression system, standard compression system, or hidden internal compression system.

Price 

Stunt scooters for kids typically range from $50-$150 in price. Like with everything kids toys, you get what you pay for with scooters. If you buy a less costly item, keep in mind that it may break after a short time because it will be of lesser quality.

This may be disappointing for both child and parent, which is why it’s a good idea to look for a skate park scooter that is well-built and has a reputation for using high-quality materials. Choose an attractive model at a reasonable price, but not too low.

They are fun to ride, and kids love them. But, despite how fun they are, they can also pose serious risks if safety precautions are not taken. So, what kind of safety measures should you take before buying a scooter for your child?

If you don’t want to see your kid get hurt or worse, receive a serious head injury whilst scooting, then you need to make sure they’re wearing the proper safety clothing, and that goes for wearing a proper helmet, too.

Helmets are designed to protect children from head injuries while also ensuring total comfort. They come in various shapes and sizes. The type of helmet you choose depends on your child’s age and size, and what wheeled sports they’ll be undertaking. 

To help make sure that you pick the right scooter helmet for your child, here are some things to consider when choosing a helmet for them.

The Helmet Size

The first thing you need to know is how big your child is. This will help you determine which size helmet you should buy. Most helmets have two different sizes. One is for small heads (under 5 years old), and the other is for larger heads (5-10 years old). If unsure, you should always go with the bigger size, as the straps can be adjusted.

The second factor to consider is your child’s weight. Helmets are not made to withstand heavy impacts. So if your child weighs more than 50 pounds, you should look for a heavier helmet.

How Do You Know What Size Helmet to Buy?

You should measure your child’s head size using an adjustable tape measure. Make sure the tape goes all the way around the back of the head and sits about 1 inch above their eyebrows, then use the chart below for reference:

The Helmet Type

There are three types of helmets available for kids undertaking any sort of wheeled fun: full face, half face, and open face.

Here is a quick breakdown of these three most common types of scooter helmets you’ll come across: 

Full Face Helmets

Full face helmets offer better protection against impact. However, they may restrict vision, which is worth thinking about when selecting which style to opt for. Also, as they cover the whole face, they tend to be more expensive than the other two types of helmets you’ll discover more about below. 

They are more commonly used with extreme BMX biking and motorized wheeled kids bikes and scooters, rather than small kids kick scooters. Due to the size and weight, they are generally recommended from 8 years+, though there are some designs made for children aged 3 to 8 years.

Half Face Helmets

The second type of scooter helmet available for you to choose from is a half-face helmet.

These offer slightly less protection than full-face helmets, but they offer much better visibility. They are usually cheaper than full-face helmets, but they may be too much for scooter-riding – unless they’re hitting the skate park and pulling tricks.

Many full-face helmets come with a detachable chin guard allowing conversion to a half helmet, ideal when your child might be switching between sports.

Open Face Helmets

Last but not least, we have open face helmets. These helmets offer the least amount of protection out of the three, but they are good for younger kids who still have room to grow. As long as they meet safety certification, an open face helmet is probably the right choice for most scooter riders.

You should check that whatever type of helmet you are purchasing for your child they meet the safety specifications for the sport they’re undertaking.

Different helmets are designed for different types of impact. Bike riding helmets, for example, sold in the US must meet must meet the CPSC 16 CFR 1203 certification for biking (excluding downhill), and also cover scootering and inline roller skates.

On the other hand, skateboarding helmets, specifically designed to withstand multiple impacts should also meet International standard for skateboarding helmets ASTM1492-15  (ironically, not mandated in the US).

You may come across the European standard EN 1078 for bicycle, skateboard and roller skate helmets. Although similar to the US standards, they’re not as stringent.

Helmet Material

Alongside the type of scooter helmet, you will also need to consider what type of material you want the scooter helmet to be made out of. You want it to be as light and comfortable as possible whilst still being durable and protecting your child’s head.

For the most part, helmets are made out of an ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) or polycarbonate plastic outer shell. The inner shell is usually made from EPS foam (expanded polystyrene).

You’ll find polycarbonate is softer, lighter and also the more expensive material. ABS, on the other hand, is much cheaper, harder and heavier, though it tends to be more scratch resistant.

Regardless of which material you decide to opt for, you should just make sure that the scooter helmet will be strong enough to resist damage from falls while also being able to provide excellent protection to your child’s head.

In addition to that, the helmet should be flexible so that it fits snugly on the head and does not cause any discomfort or pain. This can come down to additional foam inserts (usually detachable and washable) designed to make the helmet fit snugly.
